About Us

Telluride Fire Protection District

Established in 1966, the Telluride Fire Protection District (TFPD) covers 350 square miles of mountainous terrain, encompassing the historic Town of Telluride, the Town of Mountain Village, Placerville, Sawpit, and Ophir, the Telluride ski resort and multiple bedroom communities. Volunteer firefighters have been serving this community since 1878 when gold mining was the primary choice of occupation. Today with our highly trained Fire and EMS staff and volunteer personnel, we continue to serve our community and its ever growing needs.

TFPD strives to provide a safe, secure environment for the district by minimizing the impact of fire, disaster, hazardous conditions, and medical and trauma-related personal emergencies.

Message from the Chief

On behalf of the Board of Directors, our volunteer responders and staff, thank you for your interest in the Telluride Fire Protection District (TFPD). We hope you find information and resources here on our website to help you make informed fire and emergency safety decisions for you and your family.

The Telluride Fire Protection District is responsible for providing a multitude of emergency services to the residents and visitors of our community. These services include, but are not limited to: fire suppression, EMS response for medical and trauma-related 911 calls, medical transports to regional hospitals, wildfire suppression, hazardous materials investigation and control, rescue, fire prevention, public education, fire safety inspections (codes and regulations) and plan review services. Our response area is 350 square miles, mirroring the Telluride R1 School district, and is serviced by four stations. TFPD is one of the best emergency response organizations anywhere and considered an industry leader largely due to the dedication of the well-trained and professional volunteer responders (fire and EMS) and career staff who are at the ready for your emergency needs 365/24/7.

Please feel free to contact me directly with any questions or input on how we can better serve our community.

John S. Bennett, District Chief
